Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji ・ 12
Shichirigahama in Sagami Province
冨嶽三十六景 相州七里浜
In gradations of a single indigo, this print overlooks from a hill in Kamakura a cape jutting into Sagami Bay and Fuji towering behind it. It barely depicts the beach itself, and the composition that captures the cape and Fuji on a grand scale is striking.

About this work
Looking down from the hill at lower right, a tree-covered cape juts into the sea, with Fuji towering large just behind it. At the foot of the cape, the village at the edge of Shichirigahama can be seen small, and the shape of an island floats offshore at left. The protagonists of the scene are not the beach but the cape and Fuji. The slope of the hill is covered with trees drawn as dots, and in the foreground, fine lines of waves overlap many times at the water's edge.
The Yamanashi Prefectural Museum sees the print as a view of Fuji across Koyurugi Cape and Enoshima from around today's Kamakurayama. It points out, however, that apart from Fuji the landscape is composed facing southwest, and that in reality it would be difficult to see them lined up like this. The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum also considers the island at left to be Enoshima.
This is one of the early ai-zuri prints, whose name was even mentioned in the series' advertisement. The gradations of a single indigo have the feel of ink painting and suggest the shore dazzling white in strong sunlight. In impressions with more colors, the western sky is tinted, and the scene is expressed as an evening in which the village and islands sink into darkness in backlight.
The place today
Shichirigahama is a coast in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Kamakura City has selected the view of Enoshima and Mt. Fuji across the shoreline as one of the city's representative landscapes. The park at Inamuragasaki and the shore near Yukiai Bridge are highlights, and the beach's black-edged sand from iron sand is also a feature.
