Chikuzen Province: Hakozaki and Umi-no-nakamichi
六十余州名所図会 筑前 筥崎 海中の道
This print views the Umi no Nakamichi, the long spit extending into Hakata Bay, from around Hakozaki Shrine in Chikuzen Province. A red torii in the foreground and a sandbar lined with pines continuing into the distance, with sailboats and small boats floating quietly in the bay, make a spacious view.

About this work
On the cape at lower right stand a red torii and a stone lantern, with rocks showing at the water's edge. From there a narrow strip of land thick with pines extends toward the upper left, with a calm sea spreading on both sides. Several sailboats float in the bay, and a small boat is rowed along in the foreground.
At the back are green islets and a mountain with a brown summit, and the sky is overcast with gray. Dark green pines continue like a line across the pale blue sea, in a map-like composition looking down on the whole bay from a high viewpoint.
Hakozaki Shrine is an ancient shrine dedicated to the deity Hachiman, standing on the shore of Hakata. The Umi no Nakamichi is a long sandbar bounding the north of Hakata Bay, and the mountain beyond is thought to be Shikanoshima, known as the place where the gold seal was found. The Umi no Nakamichi has long been a known scenic spot, and together with the approach to Hakozaki Shrine it was a representative sight of Hakata.
The National Diet Library's impression has the same composition. The long sandbar around the bay is drawn memorably with a line of pine trees. The hues of the quiet bay spreading under the overcast sky create the calm atmosphere of this print.
The place today
Hakozaki Shrine still stands in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka, and its main hall, worship hall, two-story gate, and first torii are designated Important Cultural Properties. The Umi no Nakamichi has been developed as the national Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, linked by road to Shikanoshima at the end of the sandbar, and is also enjoyed as a route for driving and cycling.
