About this work
In the center of the picture, two pines spread their branches in a V shape. At the base of the pines is a thatched shrine, which the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum introduces as a shrine to Benzaiten. The shrine's shape seems placed to resemble the distant Fuji. The viewer is made to stand above the pines and the shrine, looking down on the lake. On the rock, clumps of grass with white plumes are dotted here and there.
On the lake's left shore, Takashima Castle is drawn as if projecting into the lake. When it was built, Takashima Castle was surrounded by lake and marsh and was called the "Floating Castle of Suwa." A single sailboat floats on the lake, and the ridgelines of the mountains surrounding the lake create a natural depth as if copied from the actual view.
On clear days Mt. Fuji can be seen from Lake Suwa, and Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige also drew the same view. The first printing was in ai-zuri, but in later printings green and pale yellow were added, and the sky was brushed with pale rose, giving colors suited to a lakeshore at dusk. Some see the influence of this bold composition, in which the view is blocked by pines, on the works of Monet.
The place today
Lake Suwa is a lake surrounded by Suwa City, Okaya City, and Shimosuwa Town in Nagano Prefecture. Takashima Castle on the lakeshore had its keep restored in 1970 (Showa 45), and the observation room on the top floor looks out over Lake Suwa. In fair weather Mt. Fuji can also be seen in the distance.
