About this work
In the center of the picture, a large gray stone torii towers over rocks on which waves break. Between its pillars can be seen a sea with large ships with lowered sails and small boats, and at back left a sheer rocky island and white sails. At right, green hills overlap, with rows of houses continuing at their foot.
The torii is drawn large to fill the picture, and its pillars and crossbeam frame the distant view like a picture frame. The sky is shaded from blue at the top to red near the horizon, expressing a calm evening sea. The contrast between white waves breaking on the rocks and the calm sea offshore is also a highlight.
Mount Yuga in the title is the present Mount Yuga, which in the Edo period drew worship as Yuga Daigongen, and visiting it together with Konpira in Sanuki, a pilgrimage called "ryo-mairi" (double pilgrimage), flourished. Tanokuchi was the harbor where pilgrims who had come by boat landed, and the torii is said to have stood at its entrance.
This print is placed after Mimasaka in the series. Impressions with the same composition are held by the Tokyo National Museum and the National Diet Library. It makes the torii marking the entrance to the faith its star, and resonates with the print of the great torii of Itsukushima in Aki.
The place today
At Tanokuchi Port a great stone torii marking the pilgrimage entrance to Mount Yuga still stands, and is said to have once stood in the sea. The main shrine of Yuga Shrine and Rendai-ji on Mount Yuga were separated by the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, but many people still visit as a sacred site for warding off misfortune, including at New Year.
