About this work

In the sea from the foreground to the middle, several boats carrying many fishermen are lined up, and between the boats a net is stretched in an arc like a dotted line. Beyond is a cape with jutting reddish-brown rocks and a pine-covered beach. At back right, green mountains continue, and a sailboat floats offshore at left.

The sea is taken broadly in bright indigo, and the line of boats expresses the motion of hauling the net. The sky is shaded from gray at the top to yellow near the horizon, and the red rocks and green mountains tighten the picture.

Goshiki Beach is on the west coast of Awaji Island facing Harima-nada, and is said to be named for the colorful pebbles that cover it. The sea around Awaji Island has thriving fishing, and what is depicted is thought to be fishing in which many people haul a net together.

Published in Ansei 2 (1855), it is placed after Kii in the series. Impressions with the same composition are held by the Tokyo National Museum and the National Diet Library. As a print overlaying a fishing scene on a famous place, it stands with the flatfish netting of Wakasa and the bonito fishing of Tosa in conveying the life of the sea in each region.

The place today

Goshiki Beach is in Goshiki-cho, Sumoto, and is known as a place to see the sun set into Harima-nada. Nearby Tsushi is the birthplace of Takadaya Kahei, who was active in the late Edo period as a Kitamae-bune shipowner, and Wellness Park Goshiki in the town has a memorial hall to Kahei.
