About this work
At left in the foreground, a man crouches in the stream, scooping with a net. Paying no attention to the people passing by, his absorption in his work contrasts with the bustle of traffic. On the plank bridge walk a woman with a tub on her head and a baby on her back, and a peddler carrying a box on a shoulder pole.
At the roadside stands a stone monument carved with characters, and a traveler in a straw hat passes beside it. In the right background are also people with boxes on their backs and staffs in their hands. The green mountain in front of Fuji is Mount Oyama, and in those days pilgrimages to the temples and shrines of Oyama (Oyama-mode) were popular among the common people. Over the fields, ropes are stretched with many small board-like things hanging from them.
Nakahara is today's Nakahara in Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Beyond the broad plain Fuji trails its skirts gently, and the cloud at upper left has a distinctive shape edged with indigo. It is one of the ten prints added after the 36, with the lines printed in black ink. The ridge on Fuji's left is drawn with a single thin long line extending nearly to the left edge of the picture. At lower right, part of a thatched roof peeks in.
The place today
Nakahara had the Nakahara Gaten, a lodge used by Tokugawa Ieyasu for falconry. According to Hiratsuka City, there is a stone monument to the lodge in the schoolyard of Nakahara Elementary School, built on the site, and traces of it can also be seen in the neighborhood name "Goten" where the school stands.
