About this work
In the foreground, a single sandy road appears in the sea. Along this road, which appears only when the tide goes out, people in straw hats make their way toward the island in twos and threes. On both sides of the road, waves come in as if marked with white dots, a way of drawing the foaming of the shallows with layered points. In front of the sand road, the beach left by the tide is drawn in many layers of flat color bands.
At the island's entrance stands a large stone lantern, and from there houses continue along the sloping approach. Among the green trees a tower rises. Fuji is placed at the right of the picture beyond the sea, appearing small beside a sailboat on the offing. The roofs of the houses are painted in indigo and unbleached beige and are packed tightly atop the stone walls.
Enoshima drew devotion as an island enshrining the goddess Benzaiten, and many people came to worship from Edo. With no bridge in those days, people crossed to the island by walking the sandbar at low tide. This print, looking down from a slightly higher viewpoint, captures the coming and going of people hurrying to worship within a limited time.
The place today
Today you can cross to the island from the Katase shore on the pedestrian Enoshima Benten Bridge. According to Fujisawa City, this bridge opened in 1949 (Showa 24) and was later rebuilt in concrete. Hetsumiya of Enoshima Shrine on the island is said to have been founded in 1206 (Kennin 1) by Minamoto no Sanetomo.
