Tsushima Province: Clear Evening on the Coast
六十余州名所図会 対馬 海岸夕晴
The final print of the series shows the coast of Tsushima Province on an evening after rain. A great rainbow arcs across the sky, sailboats gather in an intricate inlet, and island shadows fade quietly in the distance, making a bright and cheerful print.

About this work
At the bottom of the picture are a cape and inlet with a chain of small green hills, and yellow-roofed houses line the shore. Ships with sails set and anchored ships gather in the inlet, and two boats with white sails advance on the sea in front.
In the upper half of the sky a rainbow of pale colors arcs widely from left to upper right, with a few birds flying. Sailboats dot the sea in the middle distance, and a blue mountain range lies at the back. The clear air of an evening clearing is expressed in soft gradations. The pale colors of the rainbow convey the moist air after rain.
Tsushima is an island between Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula, and in the Edo period the Tsushima domain handled diplomacy and trade with Korea. An intricate coastline and many harbors are characteristic of the island. The Korean embassies also went to Edo by way of this island.
The series covering the Gokishichido provinces ends with this print of Tsushima. Drawing a rainbow in the last print is thought to be a device to give the close of the journey a cheerful note. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago also hold this same print.
The place today
Tsushima is today's Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, and in the middle of the island spreads Asou Bay, with its complex inlets. It can be reached by ferry or jetfoil from Hakata Port, and from the northern tip of the island, on a clear day, you can see the cityscape of Busan in Korea.
