About this work

A thick waterfall plunges from top to bottom in the center of the picture. Above it is a pine-covered rocky outcrop, and the water passes through several steps to become one great stream, ending in white spray below. On the reddish-brown cliffs to left and right, several thin falls trace lines. On the path along the cliff halfway down are people who have come to see the fall.

The blue of the fall is printed deep along the left edge and fading toward the right, giving a sense of the volume of water. The green of the pines, the reddish brown of the cliffs, and purplish clouds below surround the fall, and vermilion clouds trail across the top of the sky. Placing the figures small emphasizes the height of the fall.

Urami Waterfall hangs on the Arasawa River, a tributary of the Daiya River at Nikko, and gets its name ("seen from behind") because it was once viewed from a rock chamber behind the fall. Basho visited on the journey recorded in The Narrow Road to the Deep North and composed a verse about it. It was also a sight that people visiting the Nikko Toshogu Shrine would go out of their way to see.

Hiroshige makes the fall itself the star of the picture, and merely hints at the path leading behind it with thin lines and small figures. The National Diet Library also holds an impression with the same composition.

The place today

Urami Waterfall is on the upper Arasawa River, west of the town of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, and can be reached by walking a mountain path from a parking area. A flood in 1902 (Meiji 35) collapsed the upper part of the fall, so it is no longer possible to go behind it, but the fall can be viewed from the front at an observation platform.
