About this work

Most of the picture is occupied by the Yodo River, which curves widely from the foreground into the distance. Fine waves are drawn on the water, and several small boats float on it. Willows and thatched houses line the bank at lower left, which is the area of the Hirakata post town. On the right bank too, houses and a pine grove continue.

The brown mountain rising at right in the middle ground is Mount Otoko, with trees thick at its summit. To the left of the mountain, red mist spreads horizontally, and above it rise snow-capped mountains so high that they could not actually be seen from around Mount Otoko. It is thought that he exaggerated the distant view to heighten the stature of the famous mountain.

Hirakata was a post town on the Kyo Kaido linking Kyoto and Osaka, and also a river port where thirty-koku boats traveling up and down the Yodo River stopped. The "Kurawanka boats," small boats that approached passengers on the boats to sell drinks and food, were known as a local attraction.

On the summit of Mount Otoko stands Iwashimizu Hachimangu, and people traveling the river used this mountain as a landmark. Hirakata is in Kawachi and Mount Otoko in Yamashiro, so this one design brings together a landscape that spans two provinces and today's Osaka and Kyoto Prefectures.

The place today

Parts of the old Kyo Kaido townscape remain in Hirakata City, and Kagiya, a former boat inn, is open to the public as the Hirakata-juku Kagiya Museum run by the city. The main shrine of Iwashimizu Hachimangu on Mount Otoko is a National Treasure, and a cable car runs up the mountain from a Keihan Railway station. The course and banks of the Yodo River have changed greatly through improvement works since the Meiji era.
