About this work

This is a woodblock print measuring 36.2 cm in height and 24.0 cm in width, owned by the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art. As the title says, its subject is the Golden Hall of Chuson-ji in Hiraizumi. Because no image is shown on this page, please check the museum's work page for how the print looks.

Hasui died in November 1957 at the age of 74. "Golden Hall, Hiraizumi" became his final work, and the final printing is said to have been completed after his death and distributed to friends and acquaintances at the memorial service held on the hundredth day. It is regarded as the fruit of the last journey of Hasui, who continued to travel around Japan and paint landscapes from the Taisho era into the Showa era.

Hasui also depicted the Golden Hall of Chuson-ji in 1935, in the series "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Tohoku Edition." Tohoku scenery was a subject Hasui returned to repeatedly, starting with his early series "Souvenirs of Travel I," which depicted Lake Towada and Tsuta Hot Spring.

In Japan the copyright protection period for Hasui's works has expired, but because this work was published after 1957, it remains protected in the United States. This site does not show an image.

The place today

Chuson-ji is a Tendai Buddhist temple in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, and its Golden Hall is an Amida hall covered in gold leaf inside and out, built in 1124 by Fujiwara no Kiyohira, the first lord of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. Designated a National Treasure, it is now protected inside a concrete covering hall. In 2011 it was inscribed as part of "Hiraizumi" on the World Heritage List.
