About this work
This is a landscape painted in oil on a canvas measuring 65.5 cm in height and 81.8 cm in width. According to the records of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, it is signed at the lower left and was shown at the 20th Nika Exhibition, held at the Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum in 1933. Because no image is shown on this page, please check the museum's work page for how the picture looks.
In the early 1930s Yasui established a distinctive style that combined the solid sense of form he learned from Cezanne with bright coloring suited to Japanese nature. In this period he painted many landscapes from his travels alongside his figure paintings. This work is one of the pieces from that period.
The work came into the collection of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, by transfer of custody from the Agency for Cultural Affairs. It has been shown repeatedly in retrospectives and other exhibitions, beginning with the 1956 Yasui Sotaro memorial exhibition after his death.
Yasui died in 1955, and in Japan the copyright protection period has expired. However, in the United States, works that cannot be confirmed to have been published before 1930 may still be protected, so this site does not show an image.
The place today
The Oirase Stream runs about 14 kilometers from Nenokuchi on Lake Towada to Yakeyama. Waterfalls and rocks line the stream within forests of beech and other trees, with a walking path laid out along the water. Many people visit in the seasons of fresh green and autumn color, and it is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument.
