About this work

This work is an oil painting on paper mounted on a board, measuring 72.7 cm in height and 90.9 cm in width. In the records of the Iwate Museum of Art's collection, it is dated to 1936. Because no image is shown on this page, please check the museum's work page for how the picture looks.

1936 was the year Matsumoto married Matsumoto Teiko and the couple began the magazine "Zakkicho." From around this time Matsumoto devoted himself to painting the city, taking as subjects Tokyo's stations, buildings, bridges, and the people passing through. The area around Yurakucho Station is one such subject.

Matsumoto's works, he having spent his boyhood in Morioka, are presented in the Matsumoto Shunsuke gallery of the Iwate Museum of Art. Because displays are rotated, please check the museum's website to see whether this work is on view.

Matsumoto died in 1948, and in Japan the copyright protection period has expired. However, in the United States, works that cannot be confirmed to have been published before 1930 may still be protected, so this site does not show an image.
