About this work

From the lower right, bamboo hangs its branches, its leaves thick with snow. At left the long barrack wall of a daimyo residence continues into the distance, and people with umbrellas walk along the street in front. A road along the moat at right extends back, and a red gate peeps out at its end. Snow falls from the sky and sparrows fly about. The people on the street walk bent over so as not to slip in the snow.

The white snow, indigo moat, and pale gray wall convey winter's chill, while the red of the gate in the distance catches the eye in a small way. The foreground bamboo is drawn large, and the street is viewed through it.

Atagoshita was the eastern foot of Mt. Atago, a district of samurai estates lined with daimyo residences. The name Yabukoji ("Bamboo Thicket Lane") is said to derive from a bamboo thicket and is thought to refer to the small path beyond the bamboo at the right of the picture. The gate in the back is said to be the gate of Atago Shrine.

This print belongs to the winter section and depicts the area around the same Mt. Atago as the spring print "Mount Atago, Shiba." It stands with "Bikuni Bridge in Snow" and others as a snow scene of a samurai-residence townscape. The weight of the snow on the bamboo conveys the stillness of steadily falling snow.

The place today

Atagoshita corresponds to today's Nishi-Shimbashi and Toranomon in Minato Ward, and the name Yabukoji has not survived. Atago Shrine still stands atop Mt. Atago, known for its steep "Stairs of Success." The surroundings have become an office district with high-rises such as Toranomon Hills. Mt. Atago is also known as the site of the NHK Museum of Broadcasting.
